International Organization for Human Rights and Liberties Calls for Independent Investigation into Death of Moroccan National in Italy

The International Organization for Human Rights and Liberties has called on the competent Italian authorities to launch a prompt, independent, impartial and transparent investigation into the death of Moroccan national Abdelrahim Faker on Italian territory.

In an official statement issued on July 21, 2026, the Organization said it was following with deep concern reports surrounding the death and the circumstances that have raised serious questions regarding the protection of the right to life and respect for human dignity, in accordance with international human rights law.

The Organization reaffirmed that the right to life is a fundamental and non-derogable human right, stressing that the protection of the physical integrity and human dignity of all individuals, including those subject to arrest, detention or any form of intervention by law enforcement authorities, constitutes a legal and moral obligation under relevant international treaties and conventions.

It further stated that any allegations concerning the unlawful use of force or treatment incompatible with human dignity require a prompt, independent, impartial and transparent investigation aimed at establishing the truth and determining possible responsibilities, while fully respecting due process, the presumption of innocence and fair trial guarantees.

The Organization also emphasized that combating impunity and strengthening public confidence in the rule of law require competent authorities to conduct a thorough and effective investigation, ensuring the victim’s family’s right to know the truth, access to justice and reparation, in line with international standards of judicial independence, impartiality and procedural fairness.

Accordingly, the Organization called on the competent Italian authorities to take all necessary legal measures to ensure a credible, independent and transparent investigation, and to make its findings public to the extent permitted by law, in order to promote the principles of justice, accountability and respect for human rights.

The Organization concluded by expressing its human solidarity with the family and loved ones of the deceased, stressing that justice can only be achieved through the full disclosure of the truth, accountability where appropriate, and the adoption of effective measures to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents, thereby upholding human dignity and reinforcing trust in the rule of law and respect for human rights for all.
